Common Sense: thomas Paine
Instructions for completing Thomas Paine hard copy booklet
Instructions:
Participants will understand the primary arguments for Revolution as enunciated by Thomas Paine in the pamphlet “Common Sense”. They will create a online pamphlet/ magazine or website or layered booklet that uses research based instructional strategies to identify his primary arguments and their relevance today. Teachers may wish to use or more of the software provided below to assist them with their project.
When finished they will upload their final assignment using the submission tab below on or before May 23rd
Magazines/ Booklets or Pamphlets must include the following:
Cover Sheet.
Create a cover for your booklet, magazine, pamphlet, folder etc... The Cover sheet should include:
a) The title “Common Sense”
b) A creative illustration that captures the attention of the reader and encapsulates the main idea of the pamphlet. Illustrations may be hand drawn and/ or created from clip art and attached to the cover sheet.
c) Your name.
About the Author.
Write a short biography about the author, Thomas Paine. You may wish to include a list of his other works, biographical information (where from, college attended, family, academic and professional background), and the rationale he gave for writing Common Sense.
When and Where.
Include a map that identifies the primary geographical location(s) of Paine’s intended audience, as well as the date(s) the pamphlet was originally published. The map page should include:
a) A detailed map (hand drawn and/or created from clip art on the computer) that identifies the primary geographical location(s) of Paine’s intended audience
b) The map should include markers (arrows, stars, textboxes etc…) marking the location of the primary audience(s) of the pamphlet
c) Identify the date(s) during which the pamphlet was published

Analyze and evaluate the chapter entitled “Of The Origin and Design of Government in General”.
a) Write summary of the chapter entitled: “Of the Origin and Design of Government in General” Summaries should include a brief retelling of the arguments presented by Paine including his rationale for each argument. Finished summaries should be approximately 150-200 words in length.

b) Identify and provide the argument Paine enunciated in “Common Sense” that is relevant to your chosen situation.
c) Hypothesize what might happen were Paine’s arguments to be applied in the current situation you identified.
