 The story of America is the story of our fight to secure civil rights for all of it's people: ​Civil rights protect individuals' freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals. They ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the society and state without discrimination or repression..

  1. What did Slavery look like in the American South (slave trade, plantation vs urban labor, work and daily life, religion and culture, challenging the system)?
  2. How did southerners, northerners, unionists and abolitionists respond to the growing rift between slave and free in antebellum America and how were the Underground Railroad, immigration, women’s rights and minority rights a reflection of the era?
  3. What were the determining factors that affected the course of the Civil War and contributed to the end of the war and as teachers how do we address our Confederate past?
  4. Following the Civil War, what civil rights amendments, legislation and social reform sought to end discrimination? How successful were they and what organizations and laws fought against equality between 1865 and 1950?  
  5. What events and what organizations (NAACP, SCLC, SNCC)  brought about the renewed struggle for desegregation and Civil Rights in the 1950s and 1960s? 
  6. Who were the key leaders of the Civil Rights Movement (George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X) What was their message and how did they differ in their ideologies and approach to Civil Rights?
  7. What struggles for Civil Rights are still being addressed today?

Assignments

Prior to the trip all participants will read & study numerous text.  Each text will will be connected to a specific assignment.  Assignments are designed to: 1) model best pedagogical practices, 2) help participants learn the content & 3) be transferable to the Level I & Level II Curriculum. Driven2Teach will sponsor a Field Study on the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina, Georgia & Alabama. Field Study participants will visit locations significant in the Civil Right Movement and museums created to commemorate important events and individuals. They will hear from individuals who participated in the Civil Rights Movement. This course is designed for teachers of later United States History and is intended for high school teachers and 5th grade elementary teachers who include the Civil Rights Movement in their social studies curriculum. Teachers will study significant issues, events, leaders, resistance, and successes of the Civil Rights Movement.
 
The tour will start in Charleston, South Carolina, where participants will study the beginning of the slave trade, the institution of slavery and the Civil War.  They will then visit Atlanta, Georgia, where participants will study the history of African Americans and the role of Martin Luther King at the Martin Luther King National Museum.  Then, it is off to Tuskegee, Alabama, where participants will visit the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site to consider these pioneers of the Civil Rights movement and will spend time in the George Washington Carver Museum. Participants will then travel to Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery, Alabama to study at the Civil Rights Institute and the Rosa Parks Museum and to visit the 16th Street Baptist Church and will cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge with one of the original marchers. Time on the bus will be devoted to content lectures, pedagogy presentations, book groups and collaboration.   The Understanding Civil Rights in the United States Field Seminar is open to Elementary (5th grade) and Secondary Educators, Level I (8th grade) & Level II (10th grade) educators.
 
Teachers will be expected to be in sufficient physical condition to walk multiple miles daily and participate in other physical activities.  Prior to attending the field study, participants will be expected to complete numerous assignments and readings; including participation in pre-travel and post-travel seminars.  The purposes of the pre- and post- seminars are to facilitate the meshing of the content and the curriculum. Participants are expected to return to the classroom as teacher mentors in their school community
