MorningDrive from Gettysburg to Richmond Virginia
During the Civil Rights seminar we will be covering a great deal of the East Coast, from NYC to Richmond, VA. This morning we will cover the largest distance, travelling from Gettysburg PA, crossing the Mason Dixon line and travelling South into Virginia. Lest you think bus time will be an opportunity to catch up on sleep, be aware bus time will be used to share presentations, content lectures and pedagogical activities. |
AfternoonRichmond VA
Our time in Richmond will give us an opportunity to better understand Civil Rights in the American South, both before and after the American Civil War. While in Richmond we will visit the American Civil War Museum & historic Tredegar Iron Works, including a guided tour of the Tredegar area & Prisoner of War Island (Brown Island). We will then visit the national battlefield park’s main visitors center (NPS), where we will learn the story of the Battle for Richmond and the surrounding Battlefields. Leaving the River front we will walk through old Richmond’s Historic Capitol. White House of the Confederacy We will visit the Museum of the Confederacy and the ‘White House’ of the Confederacy, and have an opportunity to participate in a ranger guided tour of the Capitol and a discussion on views of slavery and revisionist views of history. |
EveningDrive to D.C & Washington After Hours
Drive to Washington D.C. We will be staying at the Hampton Inn Convention Center. The Hampton Inn Washington-Downtown-Convention Center hotel in the heart of downtown Washington, DC. The hotel is within walking distance from Chinatown shops and restaurants and the city’s famous landmarks, the White House, Capitol, and Washington Monument, and three blocks from Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro. Free perks include hot breakfast and weekday breakfast bags to go. There's also a fitness room, an indoor pool and a whirlpool. Dinner will be on your own Optional Night Tour "The Mall" Participants may take an optional night tour of the monuments on the mall. |
