MorningAfrican American Smithsonian Museum
The museum opened September 24, 2016, in a ceremony led by U.S. President Barack Obama. There is currently a three month waiting list to get into the museum, as such we are extremely lucky to have the opportunity to visit the museum. The Wall Street Journal's critic, Edward Rothstein, suggested that "even a full day's visit is insufficient for a careful survey. That alone is an imposing achievement". Rothstein wrote that the "museum is illuminating, disturbing, and movinga" At the museum he wrote that we "see the evolution of African-American newspapers, businesses, churches and other institutions. Galleries devoted to music and sports make it plain how much African-American history and culture is simply American history and culture." It is a story far too often ignored. |
AfternoonThe Mall
You will have time to visit the Museums and exhibits on the mall. To go with its monuments and memorials, the National Mall boasts an impressive lineup of free museums. Visitors should take advantage of the wide range of experiences on hand, from immersing themselves in classic art to marveling at the wonders of aviation and our natural world. Let your wallet breathe and explore these free museums during your next trip to the nation’s capital. Participants may wish to plan ahead to ensure they have time to visit the exhibits and/or museums of most interest to them. |
EveningFord's Theater
Visit Ford's Theater. We will have the opportunity to share in a guided tour with a National Park Service Ranger. While at Ford's Theater we will attend the play "One Destiny". We will learn about President Lincoln’s assassination from two men who were there. Actor Harry Hawk and Ford’s Theatre co-owner Harry Ford revisit the events of April 14, 1865. As they reconstruct the sequence of events, they grapple with the question: Could John Wilkes Booth have been stopped? This 35-minute performance explores the key facts of the assassination while capturing the emotions of that fateful night. |
