Primary Document Reading Strategy
Private Yankee Doodle by Joseph Plumb Martin, A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier: Some Adventures, Dangers, and Sufferings of Joseph Plumb Martin
Reading Comprehension strategies are conscious plans — sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text. Comprehension strategies help readers become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension. Color coded note taking is identified in the pedagogical text "Reading Strategies that Work" as a evidenced based reading strategy supported by evidence for improving text comprehension. The ultimate goal is to develop active readers who are able to eventually connect and engage with a text automatically without having to annotate. More experienced readers are commonly able to subconsciously make connections, ask and answer questions, and monitor their comprehension. Color coded note taking conceptualize this process, making it tangible for the reader, while also providing informative data for instructors. Below are a number of sites w/ basic instructions you may wish to reference when annotating the text. Instructions: Read the entire text. While doing so make color coded notes in the text that identify JPM’s feelings, analysis, and reactions to the experiences he recounts. Photograph and upload approxmimately 10 pages from your text that reflect your note taking from the biography of Joseph Plumb Martin. Find at least two secondary voices that support or differentiate from those shared by JPM and be prepared to share both your evaluation and secondary voices on the class website. Participants should bring their annotated text to the seminar. |
